Talk to us about camels in the Southern Highlands.
There are a variety of reasons someone might want to buy a camel. However, whatever the reason, it is good to know how best to care for your investment.
Our Weekend Camel Experience, facilitated by Peter Hodge (one of Australia's most experienced and respected cameleers), will not only help you prepare for buying a camel, but will also give you a few tips on how to choose and buy a camel.
Camel milk is high in insulin, which improves its absorption and makes it suitable for diabetics. Research has also found protective proteins in camel's milk that may be antiviral, anti fungal and antibacterial. Though it isn't an exceptional source, it also contains much more iron and vitamin C than cow's milk.
Camel meat is a good source of many vitamins, especially vitamin B complex and important minerals such as iron, calcium and phosphorus. Camel meat is also characterised by a low level of cholesterol (61 mg) as compared to other farm animals like beef (75-86 mg), making it a healthy food for humans.
A study has found cattle have a greater chance of performing well on poorer grasses if they are co-grazed with camels
University of Queensland scientists found micro-organisms, which allow camels to break down lower quality grasses, can be transferred to cattle when the animals eat or drink from the same trough.
Dr Rafat Al Jassim, from the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences, says the research found the micro-organisms improve the digestive system of cattle.
We have collaborated with Peter Hodge whose camel learning experiences have been developed over many years and consistently produce excellent outcomes. With Peter, your Camel Experience Weekend can be customised to meet your specific needs. We are willing to share our knowledge and provide ongoing support to people interested in the following: General care and welfare, safety issues, understanding behaviour, drenching, specialised equipment, control methods, leading, sitting, saddling, riding, loading and transportation and more. Assistance in transporting camels is offered on a cost basis.

(We even do corporate team building with camels... talk to us)
More specifically, we have been learning about camels since 2002 when we went to the Simpson Desert with Phil Gee and learnt to break in and work with camels on a desert trek. We have continued to 'tap in' to the cameleers around Australia to develop our understanding of 'trust-based' cameleering. 'Trust-based' cameleering is all about building relational assurance with our camels through recognition and reward strategies acknowledging the particular sensitivities of camels. We have relied very heavily on the experience of Peter Hodge, based in Victoria, for our strategies in what we are calling 'assurance-based' camel training.
Wayne, manager at Elouera Vale, has even developed specific team building activities with camels, through his corporate work, which have proven to produce memorable, sustainable outcomes through enhanced teamworking. So since 2002, along this learning journey, we have learnt many things, most often the hard way, which has moved us to be 'even more than keen' to share camel information we know with those interested.
We offer:
